In spain, Beller peppers are stuffed with cheesy stuffing. where in india, bell peppers are stuffed with spiced potatoes. Middle Eastern version is different as well.

I am sharing a typical indian home style stuffed capsicum recipe today. Capsicum is also known as bell peppers. In hindi, it is known as ” shimla mirch”. This ingredient is widely popular in India.

For this recipe, I simply prepare my potato stuffing with onion and green chili. I wanted to keep this recipe simple but I sometimes add green peas, carrots and garam masala as well. This recipe can be prepared in 30 mins and yes, it goes best with chapati and paratha. It actually works as a side dish but because this is dry curry recipe, I don’t like this bharleli shimla mirch with rice. The choice is always up to you.

Also, you can bake your capsicum instead of cooking in pan. I am actually obsessed with my pan so I usually cook it in the pan. 😉

stuffed capsicum recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 medium capsicum, washed
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ¼ cup water

for stuffing

  • 2 medium potateos, boil and mashed
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ¼ tsp mustard
  • ¼ tsp cumin
  • ¼ cup onion
  • 2 green chilies, optional
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp coriander powder, optional
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • wash your capsicum and remove the seeds. meanwhile, boil your potatoes.
  • keep aside.
  • mash your potatoes and keep aside.
  • heat oil in pan.
  • add mustard seeds and cumins.
  • add a pinch of asafoetida and curry leaves.
  • add green chilies and onion.
  • saute for a while.
  • add turmeric powder,red chili powder, coriander powder and salt.
  • mix.
  • add mashed potaotes.
  • mix and simmer for 2 mins. filling is ready.
  • stuff the capsicum with potato filling.
  • heat a little bit oil in a same pan.
  • gently put the stuffed capsicum into it.
  • add a little bit of water.
  • cook until the capsicums are softened.

recipe notes,

  • do not add more water. also, simmer cappsicum for 5 mins before adding water. water will help to cook fasten.
