Palak moong dal khichadi is a nutritious and healthy one-pot meal recipe that can be prepared under 30 mins. Palak is a Hindi word of spinach. This recipe is loaded with the goodness of spinach and you can extend this recipe by adding your favorite vegetables. This khichadi is little-bit spicy in taste which makes this recipe a perfect winter recipe.

Coming back to the topic, I am a die heart khichdi fan and I guess you already know that;) I am a person who can survive on khichadi. I prepare simple rice and moong dal khichadi 5 days per week as we both belong to the Gujarati family and khichadi with simple curry is our favorite comfort food.
Being a khichdi lover, I always love to do some variations. My mother used to add chopped spinach in khichadi recipe which I absolutely love. This recipe is definitely my own interpretation of my mother’s khichadi recipe.
Ingredients to make palak khichadi
Ingredients are pretty simple here. I used homemade spinach puree, kolam rice, green moong dal, salt, oil, garlic, ginger, green chili, and onion. You can always extend the recipe with your favorite vegetables.
Can we freeze this palak khichadi?
Well, YES. You can store this palak khichadi. Make sure to pack khichadi in an airtight container or a freezer bag and squeeze out the excess air. You can store this khichadi for up to 5 days.

Palak moong dal khichadi recipe
Equipment
- Pressure cooker
Ingredients
- 1 cup spinach puree
- 1 cup rice
- ½ cup moong dal(green)
- salt to taste
- 1 tbsp ghee / clarified butter
- 1 tsp oil, optional
- a pinch of cumin
- ½ tsp ginger, grated
- 4 garlic cloves
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 medium green chili, chopped
- a pinch of asafoetida
- a pinch of turmeric powder
- 3½ cup water, too cook lentils
Instructions
- If you have some time then wash your dal and rice in running water and soak it for 20 mins. You can completely skip this step. However, soaking will help to cook lentils faster.
- heat oil+ghee in a pressure cooker and add cumin.
- add asafoetida.
- add garlic and onion and saute for a while.
- also, add ginger and green chili. saute for a while.
- now add rice, moongdal, palak puree and mix.
- add salt and turmeric powder and mix well.
- add water and cover the pressure cooker with the lid.
- keep the flame medium and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.
- garnish with fried onions and serve hot.
Notes
- you can use either chopped spinach or pureed spinach. Both will give the same taste however there will be a difference in color.
- You can add your choice of vegetables along with onions and garlic.
