so, how to make onion sambar recipe?step by step photos:

prepare your lentils first. wash your toor dal and pressure cook it until 4-5 whistles. keep it aside. also, soak tamarind in warm water.

heat oil in pan and mustards. add dry red chilies and curry leaves.

now, add onions and saute it for a while.

add tomatoes and tamarind water.

also, add cooked dal and plain water (to adjust sambar consistency).

season it with red chili powder, turmeric powder,sambar powder and salt. mix it well.

boil it for 10 to 15 mins.

enjoy with rice or idlis.

Ingredients  

  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • cup toor dal
  • 1 cup water, to pressure cook dal
  • 1 cup water , to adjust sambar consistency
  • 1 tbsp onion
  • ¼ tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 dry red chilies
  • 6-7 curry leaves
  • 1 tsp sambar powder
  • ½ tsp red chili powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • fresh coriander, for garnishing
  • 1 small tomato, chopped
  • ¼ cup water, to soak tamarind
  • 1.5 tbsp tamarind

Instructions

  • wash your toor dal in running water. transfer it into a pressure cooker and cook it for 4 whistles.
  • meanwhile, soak tamarind in warm water. you can use this  water as it is or strain to avoid tamarind chunks.
  • slice your onion and keep aside.
  • heat oil in pan.
  • add mustard seeds.when they crackle add dry red chilies and curry leaves.
  • also add sliced onion and saute it.
  • add tomatoes and tamarind water.
  • add cooked dal.
  • add salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder and sambar powder.
  • add water to adjust consistency.
  • boil this mixture for 10 mins.
  • garnish with coriander and enjoy.
