Instructions
wash your toor dal in running water. transfer it into a pressure cooker and cook it for 4 whistles.
meanwhile, soak tamarind in warm water. you can use this water as it is or strain to avoid tamarind chunks.
slice your onion and keep aside.
heat oil in pan.
add mustard seeds.when they crackle add dry red chilies and curry leaves.
also add sliced onion and saute it.
add tomatoes and tamarind water.
add cooked dal.
add salt, red chili powder, turmeric powder and sambar powder.
add water to adjust consistency.
boil this mixture for 10 mins.
garnish with coriander and enjoy.

you can use any type of onions. use shallots for best results.
