Palak Dal recipe is the simple recipe which can be considered as main course recipe or dal| kadhies recipe.As it Name suggests the main ingredient of the recipe is PALAK or Spinach. When i heard Word Spinach I flew to my childhood memories – How I Dislike to have spinach like others kids in my meal and my mom gives me the example of Popeye-The Sailor man. She and my dad took a LOT of efforts to have Spinach and all greens because I really didn’t like greens that time.dal-palak-priyascurrynation

Moving to this recipe- Palak Dal is a Versetile recipe as this have diffrenet versions. This can be made with Yellow Moong, Pink Lentil , Pigeon pea lentil OR Bengal Gram. I am sharing pigeon pea version today.pigeon pea or toor dal like other lentils and pulses is a good source of protein and dietary fibre.It is low in fat and rich in B complex vitamins, calcium and potassium. And Spinach is a Good source of iron.

I have Prepared Dal Palak with Onion and garlic.onions and garlic have a strong flavor and taste.This recipe has the subtle aroma of ghee tempered with cumin. I have added fried onions on the top to add some flavors.I used it because I have it already. If you don’t have, you can avoid.dal-palak-priyascurrynation

Because we are boiling Toor dal using a pressure cooker, It adds more Creaminess into the dal texture.I Used Chana dal or bengal gram along with toor dal which is totally optional to use.I love Dal Palak with Roti and Rice. This is my super favorite Comfort meal. I Love this recipe with my simple khichdi as well.

You can Serve This With Plain Rice, Paratha OR Roti.

dal palak recipe , how to make spinach dal fry recipe.

Protein rich dal recipe cooked with spinach and toor dal .

Ingredients  

to boil dal:

  • ½ cup toor dal / pigeon pea split
  • 1 tbsp chana dal /bengal gram
  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup spinach, finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder

for dal preparation:

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • ¼ tsp cumins
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 medium green chillies, chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp red chili powder, or as per your taste
  • salt to taste
  • a pinch of garam masala, optional
  • 1 tbsp fried onions, to garnish
  • fresh coriander , chopped, to garnish

for tempering / tadka :

Instructions

to boil dal:

  • wash chana dal and toor dal first and add into pressure cooker.
  • Add finely chopped spinach / palak.
  • Add turmeric powder.
  • Add water and cover with lid.pressure cook the dal for 4-5 whistles on medium flame.
  • keep your boiled dal aside.

for dal preparation:

  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add cumins and asafoetida.
  • Add ginger,garlic, green chilies and onions.
  • saute it for a while.
  • Add turmeric powder and mix well. cook the mixture until softened.
  • Add red chili powder, salt, and garam masala. mix well.
  • Add boiled dal.and mix.
  • Cook the dal for 6-7 minutes on medium flame.

for tadka /tempering:

  • heat oil+ghee.
  • Add cumins. when they crackle add red chili powder.
  • Pour this tadka on dal.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

  • you can avoid chana dal or bengal gram.
  • you can avoid the final tadka OR tempering process if you want to keep your dal really simple.
  • you can add tomatoes if you like. I don't like tomatoes in my dal palak so i am not using it. If using, Use 1 small tomato for this measurement.

  17. Garnish and Serve hot.
