Tomato jaggery chutney is tangy and sweet chutney recipe which is perfect for summers and goes best with Indian meals. you can even use this chutney in your sandwiches and sometimes it works as a tomato jam too.

Indian cuisine story is incomplete without the mention of different chutneys. Chutneys are integral part of our meals. The varieties of chutneys can be prepared according to the season in indian households.

What is chutney?

Before moving to the recipe, Allow me to throw some lights on the concept of chutney.

well, Chutney is a sauce or a dry base for a sauce, originating from the Indian subcontinent, used with the indian meals. This can include such forms as a spicy coconut dip, a ground peanutgarnish or a dahi (yogurt), cucumber, and mint dip. Medicinal plants that are believed to have a beneficial effect are sometimes use into chutneys.

A brief history about chutney

Similar in preparation and usage to a pickle, simple spiced chutneys can be dated to 500 BC Originating in India, this method of preserving food was subsequently adopted by the Romans and later British empires, who then started exporting this to the colonies, Australia and North America.

What is tomato chutney made of?

As the name suggests, This tomato chutney has two HERO ingredients which are ripe tomatoes and jaggery. Ginger is used here as a flavouring agent. A pinch of red chilli powder is used to give nice red color to the recipe which is totally optional.

Can we store this jaggery tomato chutney?

Well, The answer is YES. You can store this chutney for 7 days in the refrigerator. So, prepare your chutney on the weekend and enjoy it throughout the week. Also, Always store your food in an airtight container.

Let’s make tomato and jaggery chutney,

wash your tomatoes first. dice them and transfer isn a mixer jar.

churn them to a smooth paste and keep it aside.

take a pan. heat oil and add cumin.

transfer tomato paste in a pan.

add jaggery and mix well.

add salt, ginger, red chili powder, green chili to it.

boil the chutney until thickens.( it usually takes 8 mins on high flame)

turn off the flame.

cool it down completely.

store in an air tight container. serve as needed.

Ingredients  

  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes
  • ½ cup jaggery
  • salt to taste

  • 1 small green chili, optional
  • 1 tsp oil
  • ¼ tsp cumin

  • add jaggery and mix well.
