The cooking method of this dal may slightly vary. usually, this dal is prepared with tuvar/toor dal aka pigeon pea split. I cooked both dal and tomatoes together until mushy.you can add tomatoes while preparing tadka. most of the time, I hate to have tomato chunks in my dals so I either pressure cook them with lentils or add tomato puree. Ingredients
- ¼ full cup toor dal, soaked for 1 hour so it doubles in size
- 1 cup water , to boil dal
- ½ cup water , for dal preparation
- ½ cup tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tsp oil
- ¼ tsp cumin
- ⅛ tsp mustard seeds
- 5-6 nos curry leaves
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- ½ tsp ginger , grated
- ½ tsp green chili paste, 1 small green chili
- salt to taste
- coriander , for garnishing
Instructions
- transfer soaked dal and chopped tomatoes into a pressure cooker.
- add water.
- add turmeric powder.
- pressure cook dal for 4-5 whistles.
- mash cooked dal and keep aside.
- heat oil in a pan.
- add mustard and cumin.
- add curry leaves.
- when they crackle, add onion and saute.
- add ginger and green chili.
- add red chili powder and turmeric powder.
- add boiled and mashed dal.
- add salt to your taste.
- add water little bit.
- boil for 7 mins.
- serve hot.
