No-Oil chole methi recipe is delicious and healthy chole masala recipe which can go best with rice, chapati and paratha. This recipe has 0% oil yet super delicious.
What is chole?
Chole is a popular north Indian curry recipe made with garbanzo beans/white chickpeas. I have already shared the classic chole masala recipe here. Those who are new to Indian Cooking, Please check our common Indian pulses and Common Indian spices guide.
Ingredients
As the name suggests, Hero ingredients of the recipe are fresh fenugreek leaves(methi leaves) and chickpeas. Other ingredients used here are bay leaf, onion, chole masala powder and other regular spices. If you don’t have chole masala powder then you can use garam masala powder.
When I was thinking to make no-oil chole, I thought to add some greens. Chole – palak and palak dal is pretty common in my home So I wanted to try something different and Methi leaves comes to rescue.
This recipe is a pressure cooker recipe and pretty easy to prepare. The maximum amount of time required here to soak chickpeas. You can even use canned chickpeas too.

How to make no-oil chole palak recipe?
take a deep bowl and soak chana for 6-7 hours or overnight. add water in pressure cooker, add soaked chana and pressure cook for 5-6 whistles or until soften.
keep it aside.(do not discard the water. you can use later in the gravy)
heat pan. Add bay leaves and asafoetida.Add onions and saute for a while.
Add green chili, water and chopped methi leaves. mix well.
add turmeric powder, red chili powder, Coriander powder, Salt to taste and chole masala powder.
Add cooked chana, water and mix well.
simmer on the medium flame for 7-8 mins.
serve hot.

- ¼ cup + 1 tbsp white chickpeas
- 3 cups water, to soak chana
- 3 cups water, cook chickpeas

- a pinch asafoetida
- ½ cup onion, chopped
- ⅓ cup water, too cook methi leaves
- 1 cup fresh fenugreek/methi leaves
- salt to taste
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- red chilli powder to taste
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 2 tsp chole masala powder
- 1 cup water, to cook curry
- ¼ tsp lemon juice, optional
Instructions

Notes
- You can use garam masala powder instead of chole masala powder. if using, add 1 tsp of garam masala powder ONLY as garam masala has a very strong flavour.
- You can use canned chickpeas as well.
