even during the fast, We also have a variation called “sabudana khichari”. So, basically khichari is nothing but a “salty porridge” .
This version of khichari is made from soaked moth beans and rice. This khichri is tempered with cumins and spiced with green chilies. You can add onions if you like however i am avoiding it. So overall this recipe light to consume and very easy to digest.

mothaan di khichri
Ingredients
- ¼ cup moth beans
- 1 cup water, to soak moth beans
- 2 cup water, to cook khichri
- 1 tbsp ghee
- ½ cup rice
- ¼ tsp cumin
- a pinch of asafoetida
- 5-6 nos curry leaves
- 1-2 medium green chilies
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- ¼ tsp red chili powder
- salt to taste
Instructions
- soak moth beans for 2 hours atleast. after getting soaked, beans doubles up in size.
- soak rice for 30 mins to get the best result.
- heat ghee.
- add cumins.
- add asafoetida.
- add curry leaves and green chilies.
- saute.
- add soaked moth beans.
- add soaked rice.
- add turmeric powder and red chili powder.
- add salt to taste.
- add water and mix.
- pressure cook for 5 whistles.
- add a dollop of ghee on the top.
- serve hot.
