Idli podi powder recipe, idli milagai podi recipe with a very quick video and stepwise photos recipe. Idli podi is another spice powder recipe widely used in Tamilnadu. Idli podi is the recipe that is used to make spiced idlis or masala idlis- that is what we called in hindi. In tamil language, word milagai means red chillies and podi means powder.
Idli podi also called as dosa podi in Kerala is eaten as a dipping condiment: The diner takes a teaspoon of powder on his plate, makes a well in the centre, adds sesame or other oil to this crater, and mixes in the powder to form a moist paste. Pieces of idli or dosa are then broken off and dipped into this tasty oil-powder mix, and eaten. It may also be simply added dry to food.It is a convenient substitute for chutneys and is usually available in most households in Tamil Nadu.
I am gujarathi by birth but I love to try different recipes and idli is the staple recipe in my home since childhood. After moving to maharashtra, I got to learn about pudi idli and I seriously loved it. Since then, I try to keep a small jar of podi powder in my kitchen.
There are different varieties of idli podis in tamil nadu but the recipe I am sharing today is the very basic version.
Let’s make idli podi recipe
Heat a pan and add chana dal. Add urad dal as well. Roast both in low flame.
Now, add cumin, flaxseeds, dry red chillies, sesame and dry coconut.
Add tamarind , garlic cloves and curry leaves as well.
mix them and roast for 5 to 7 mins until it leaves aroma.
cool the roasted ingredients and transfer it in a mixer jar.
Grind the ingredients to the consistency you like. You can grind it fine, slightly coarse or to a coarse powder.
