according to wiki, peda originated from mathura, uttarpradesh. peda or especially, milk peda is still considered as a sweet delicacy of uttar pradesh. in mathura, peda’s are served as a prasad to gods. however, from a nutrition perspective, it has very less carbohydrates and protein. but very high in fat, so be responsible while consuming milk peda’s. 😉

When it comes to Indian sweets, Mava peda is probably my first choice. I Just Love the simplicity of the peras.I first saw this recipe on one of my fellow blogger’s time- shibani and I also told her that I am going to do this. It was one of the quickest decision after watching the photos I have made which rarely happens with me. 😉

I usually prepare pedas in Janmashtami. I will repeat this recipe on janmshtami as a “Bhog” along with my homemade butter. 

This recipe is very easy to prepare as requires milk powder, milk and ghee/clarified butter. you can use your choice of dryfruits and cardamom, saffron for the flavors. I used saffron threads here. These milk peda can be prepared in minutes and no expertise required. This recipe needs some extra care because we use milk powder here which is slightly tricky to handle.

Prep Time 3 minutes
Cook Time 7 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients 

  • ½ +1/4 cup milk powder
  • ¼ cup ghee/clarified butter
  • ¼ cup milk
  • sugar as per your taste, optional
  • 4-5 saffron threads
  • ¼ cup dryfruits, optional

Instructions

  • in a kadai, heat ghee first.
  • add milk.
  • add half quantity of milk powder.
  • add sugar.
  • mix and avoid lumps.
  • add remaining milk powder.
  • add some saffron threads for the flavor.
  • mix and keep stirring.
  • cook the mixture until thickens and leaves the pan.
  • turn off the flame and add dryfruits.
  • allow it to cool down.
  • take a portion and prepare a medium size ball. give a peda shape to it.
  • enjoy.
