How to make buttermilk with vinegar? and how to use it in baking projects? is the common question I received so many times. I have recently started using buttermilk in my baking projects and I find this recipe very useful hence I am sharing it with you all.

Before moving further, I just want to mention here, This is not regular buttermilk which made from curd, This buttermilk is made from milk and vinegar/lemon juice. This buttermilk can ONLY be used for baking where buttermilk is required.

You can use this buttermilk to make recipes like bread, waffles, pancakes, cakes, biscuits, etc. I have recently used this buttermilk in my chocolate cookies too.

How to make buttermilk for baking

Baking with buttermilk? Yes…. No….. Yes… Don't worry, If you are running out of buttermilk then This substitute will 100% work for you.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Serving Size 78 ml approx

Ingredients  

  • cup milk, * check notes
  • 1 teaspoon plain white vinegar , OR Lemon Juice

Instructions

  • First measure white vingear or lemon juice properly.
  • Take a mixing bowl or cup and mix milk and vinegar together.
  • keep aside for 5 to 10 minutes and you will notice that your milk has curdled already.
  • Use this buttermilk in your next baking projects.

Notes

  • I used 3.25% milk here however you can use your choice of milk. 
  • I have not tried this method with any dairy-free milk varieties yet. 
  • You can store this buttermilk for 2 to 3 days in a refrigerator.
  • Use this buttermilk in your baking projects only. This buttermilk can not be replaced with your regular buttermilk for consuming directly.
