Types of BreadCrumbs

There are basically two types of breadcrumbs called for in recipes: fresh breadcrumbs and dry breadcrumbs. Fresh breadcrumbs are simply finely crumbled bread; they have a light, moist texture and produce a softer coating, crust, or stuffing.

Dry breadcrumbs are fresh breadcrumbs that have done some time in a low oven. They keep for months at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

There is another type of BreadCrumbs in japan which is known as Panko. Panko is a variety of flaky bread crumb used in Japanese cuisine as a crunchy coating for fried foods.

Let’s begin,

Choose Your Bread

As we eat whole wheat bread mostly, I generally use Britania whole wheat bread for my breadcrumbs. Britania serves one of the best bread in the Indian market. If you eat white, use your favourite bread.

Making Homemade Bread Crumbs

Method 1 -Preheat your oven to 300 degrees. Either trim crusts from the bread or leave them on. Your bread crumbs will be finer without the crusts. Cut bread into cubes or tear into pieces and toss in the bowl of a food processor or a mixer grinder. Process until bread forms fine crumbs. Spread on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until crumbs are golden and dry.

Method 2 – If you don’t have a microwave, Don’t worry This method will work for you. Take your bread slices and cut them. Transfer in a food processor or a mixer grinder and churn them. Transfer this breadcrumbs in a pan and roast it until golden brown on medium flame.

Allow them to cool.

Storing Breadcrumbs

Store your fresh or cooled dry breadcrumbs in clean, dry glass jars or other air tight containers for up to one year. You can keep them in the cupboard, but if you live in a very humid environment, store dry breadcrumbs in the freezer or refrigerator to prevent spoilage. Discard breadcrumbs if you notice any mold or detect off-odours when opening the container.

    1. I love homemade bread crumbs. They’re so much better and cheaper than store bought. And it’s the perfect way to use up stale bread. Plus, you get to experiment with different kinds of bread and the different textures they give, especially when fried. Great tips, Priya!

    2. I often save all the sides of the bread before none of us like that and then I make crumbs with that LOL I leaves those outside uncovered and it turns hard and makes it easy to grind and store.
