What is hummus?

Hummus is a popular Middle Eastern dip, spread recipe that is served with Middle Eastern breads like pita and crackers too. The main ingredients of the recipe are chickpeas and sesame.

However, Today’s recipe is made without sesame sauce which is called tahini yet delicious.

Hummus history

There is no concrete evidence found about the origin of the hummus recipe however, hummus is a widely popular Middle Eastern recipe.

Can we store this hummus?

YES! You can store this hummus. it will stay fresh for 3 to 4 days when stored in a refrigerator. You can even deep freeze this hummus too. I have deep freeze this hummus for a month. Use a freezer-friendly zip-lock bag and you are good to go for a month 😉

Chickpeas – soaked and boiled chickpeas are used here. I have soaked chickpeas overnight and pressure cook it. I later freeze these boiled chickpeas and using them in this hummus recipe. You can even use canned chickpeas.

Garlic – garlic cloves really enhances the taste of this hummus.

Other – salt, oil, cumin, and lemon juice are other ingredients I used in this recipe.

How to make hummus without tahini?

Take out the chickpeas from the freezer if using frozen chickpeas. If you are using fresh chickpeas then drain out all the liquid you added while boiling chickpeas.If you are using canned chickpeas, drain chickpeas and keep it aside.

Transfer chickpeas, garlic cloves, salt, cumin, and oil into a blender. Churn smooth. Transfer into a bowl and top it with some more oil.

  • salt to taste
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin

  1. I make all sorts of spreads using chickpeas. I don’t always call them hummus, but that’s basically what they are. Mine, of course, never have garlic… But they are all good just the same! I love that you don’t let the missing tahini stop you from enjoying this delicious dish. Happy New Year!
