Roasted pepper raita/capsicum raita is a delicious yogurt-based condiment recipe that serves with biryani and pulao. This raita recipe is one of my go-to recipes. Do you know what is my favorite part of the recipe? It is can be done in 10 minutes.
This recipe is also known “shimla mirch ka raita” in hindi.
What is raita?
Well, Raita is a south asian condiment recipe made from yogurt. Raita is also known as “pachadi” in South Indian homes. This recipe has a lot of variations. You can make this recipe with fruits and vegetables or both.
Ingredients to make raita
One of the best part about any raita recipe is, You can make some delicious raita with minimal ingredients. To make this roasted bellpepper raita, You will need
Green Capsicum, fresh yogurt ( check this tutorial to make yogurt at home), salt, jalapeños, sugar and cumin powder. that’s it!
Serving Suggestions
You can serve raita with any Indian Meal. Raita and Biryani is an all-time hit combo. Apart from curries, You can serve raita with any pulao recipes.
Can we store this raita?
You can store this raita for 2 to 3 days when stored in a refrigerator. Roasted peppers won’t stay fresh for a longer period of time. If you are planning to pre-prepare this raita, then I suggest adding roasted capsicum just before serving. You can store a simple yogurt mixture in the refrigerator for 9 to 10 days.

How to make Capsicum raita?
First, Roast your capsicum. To roast – heat pan and and roast capsicum on a medium flame. After few minutes, you will notice that the skin of the peppers started peeling off. Roasting pepper this way will give the smoky effect.
Remove the skin, and chop green pepper.
Take a bowl and transfer chopped pepper, yogurt, salt, jalapeños, cumin powder and sugar. mix it well.
Serve immediately or refrigerate it for an hour. serve chilled.

- ½ teaspoon Jalapeños , chopped- adjust to your taste
- salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon sugar, adjust to your taste
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder

This is a very different Arita from what we see in Indian restaurants in the US. It sourness really good and I look forward to trying it. I also like your method for roasting the capsicum.

A very different raita recipe, perfect for any biriyani!
We have a local Indian takeaway that we order from now and then. On Fridays they always have biryani, which is what I always go for. But the raita the sell as a side is a mint raita. Your roasted pepper raita/capsicum raita sounds perfect for biryani, so I’ll be making this the next time we do Friday Indian takeaway…
