Hey hey!
When I started this blog, I didn’t know how to capture a photo using DSLR, I didn’t know anything about garnishing, I didn’t know anything about food photography props and photography background. Can you guys believe that I didn’t even know that materials such as canvas do exist in this world ;). But all those things are past, and I am better than what I used to be in terms of photography skills.
I am learning and I am literally enjoying this journey. Every day I search a lot about food styling and other food blog related content because my Blog is altogether another “world” to me and I really want to improve it. The aim of this blog is to share what I know.
A few months back, I discovered that we can design photography backgrounds at home too. Designing backgrounds is not only fun but it is cost-effective too. I personally feel that designing backgrounds at home is art too. You should have good sense of colour combination and a good imagination to think about how it would look once a photo is clicked. My earlier attempts to design backgrounds were a big failure because I failed to come up with a good colour combination. In most of the cases, I either ended up having backgrounds that are too dark or yellowish. But after a couple of failed attempts and over a period of time, I eventually got hold of it and got better at it.
I hope you guys will find this post useful too.
What you’ll need to make your very own food photography backdrop
- Plain Canvas Board – I am using the Canvas board here. You can even use a plywood board too. However, the colour effect would be different.
- Colours – I am using Acrylic colours here and I would suggest using acrylic colours only.
- Washing up Sponge – Sponge is another must need a tool. It will help to give a nice texture to the background.
That’s all 🙂
Step -1
Choose a board. I chose a medium-size canvas board that is not too big not too small. Keep in mind that you should able to place the stuff on your board properly. There are a lot of sizes available for canvas boards.
Note- do not forget to spread some plastic of rough paper on the floor before starting to paint your board. As colour may ruin your flooring.
Step -2
Adding colors on your board. I prefer to so small amount of patch test first and see how your colors gonna look like on your canvas board.
Step- 3
spreading colors on the board. Blend and spread your colors using a sponge. If you feel dryness then I would suggest soaking your sponge in water and squeeze it properly. Make sure no extra amount of water remaining in the sponge and start spreading your colour again.
Dab a little bit to give some texture. You don’t need perfection as imperfections give a lot of texture.
Step -4
Dry it out properly. It will take 1 hour usually but time varies.
FAQs
- Where to buy canvas boards? You can get it anywhere in stationery shops. YOu can get it from Walmart as well. I got mine one from Walmart
- Cost for canvas boards? cost depends on the size you choose. My board costs 3.99CAD approx.
Important Tip
Always test your board. Put something on it and photograph it. You will get the actual idea about how your board will look in photograph.
What a beautiful pretty blue and so nice to see your beautiful face in this post. You are so very skilled at this task. I have a few new backgrounds but it is so funny how I always gravitate to the darker shades for those dark and moody shots. Hope you are doing well.
Thanks a lot bobbi :)yeah we are settling down here.hope you are doing great too.
As you can see from my blog, I tend to use lots of different fabrics as backgrounds. I never thought to paint one myself… Perhaps it’s time!
Yeahhh… Do try. You will love it.
