Sugar cookies are my personal favorite cookie recipe as these cookies are made without baking powder and butterryyyy too 😉 I have shared a lot of cookies recipes on the blog here but this “Christmas Sugar Cookies” are something I can eat anytime.
What is sugar cookie?
The sugar cookie is a type of cookie recipe where the main ingredients are butter, all-purpose flour, and sugar. In North America, sugar cookies are popular during the holidays of Children’s Day Christmas, and Halloween.
History of sugar cookies
Sugar cookies are said to be found around the 1700s in Pennsylvania. It is also known as Nazareth cookie. In 1950’s Pillsbury began selling pre-mixed refrigerated sugar cookie dough in US grocery stores, as a type of icebox cookie.
Can we store these sugar cookies?
Yes, You can store these cookies. Store it in an air tight container and it will stay fresh for 7 days without any worry 🙂
Freezing – You can freeze the cookie dough. Once the dough is ready, transfer in a ziplock bag and freeze it. Take it out from the freezer before an hour of baking.
Ingredients
These cookies requires minimal ingredients (shown below)
Butter – Hero ingredient of the recipe.
All- purpose flour – Fine quality, unbleached all purpose flour is used in this recipe. Those who are in India, can use maida.
Sugar – I have used granulated sugar here. You can use powdered sugar too.
Other – A pinch of baking soda adds the next level texture to cookies. Salt, vanilla extract and milk are the other ingredients.
How to make these classic sugar cookies?
Making sugar cookies is very easy and requires less time. Start with whisking butter until it is smooth. Once the butter is smooth enough, add sugar and mix well.
Meanwhile preheat your oven at 180˚C for 15 minutes.
Once sugar and butter mixed well, Add flour, salt, baking soda and roughly mix.
Add vanilla extract and milk and form a dough. If you feel the dough is very smooth and you are unable to roll, refrigerate it for 30 to 60 minutes.
Dust some flour on the surface (your work station) and roll into a thick sheet. Note – make sure cookies are thick enough otherwise It will burn quickly.
Use your favourite cookie cutter and give them a shape.
Transfer in a baking pan and bake it at 180˚C for 15 to 17 minutes.
Cool it down completely. Cookies will get crispy once it is cooled down completely.
Decorate and store it in an air tight container.

- a pinch vanilla extract, 1 drop of extract
- dry flour , to dust
- royal icing, for decoration

Notes
- Butter should be at room temperature. You will not get the best result if butter is cold.
- Gently form the dough using your hands.
- If you are living weather is humid, refrigerate the cookie dough for 30 minutes atleast.

Is this recipe okay with those who follow a vegan diet?
if you are ok to take all-purpose flour then vegans can definitely try this recipe. Just make sure to replace milk with a vegan substitute.
