Restaurant style dal fry with step by step photos- dal fry is undoubtedly one of the best recipe from north indian region🔝. Dal-fry is very famous among india and in other countries as well.
I have tried dal fry at many restaurants and it is one of my favorite recipe.After trying several times at home, i finally managed to get the Exact taste as we found in restaurants😜. pigeon-peas split or toor dal is one of my favorite lentils so i prepared this dal fry using tur can even try this recipe moong dal also.

Dal-fry is different recipe from dal tadka as i have both have different preparation method. Dhaba style dal fry is quite different recipe from restaurant style dalfry.
restaurant style dal fry is very easy to make at home😎. I tried to share each and every step plus tips i followed here.


To make dal fry recipe cook toor dal really well. Once it is done,use a masher or a ladle and mash up well like you will do for baby’s food. It is the dal itself that gives this dal fry recipe the required creaminess and we are not adding anything special or extra for richness. To make restaurant style dal fry recipe, add butter for sauteing.
This dal fry is lightly spiced and with sublime flavors. Even toddlers and kids s who are not fond of eating bland dal rice will enjoy this flavorful dish.This is best eaten with rotis or jeera rice,steamed plain basmati rice along with ghee.
The consistency of dal fry recipe is your choice, you can make it a bit thick if you are serving it as side dish and make it a bit thin if you want to mix it with rice and eat.

  Recipe dal fry-how to make dal fry restaurant style

Prep Time :20 min
Cook Time :15 min
Total Time :35 min
Main Ingredient :Pigeon peas splits/ toor dal
Serves : 2 persons
Cuisine : north indian


  • pigeon peas split / toor dal – 1 cup
  • Chana dal / bengal gram – 1/2 cup
  • water – 3 cups , to boil dal
  • salt to taste
  • oil -3 tbsp
  • cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • onion ,finely chopped – 1 medium size
  • tomatoes , finely chopped – 1 medium size
  • garlic cloves – 5 nos
  • ginger , grated /paste – 1 tsp
  • green chili,chopped- 1 medium size
  • red chili powder – a pinch
  • turmeric powder – a pinch
  • coriander,chopped – for garnishing
  • water – 1/4 cup [if needed]

Ingredients for tempering:


  1. Boil you dal first. to boil, wash toor dal well.
  2. Add dals,water,salt,turmeric powder and red chili powder in pressure cooker. Add water and pressure cook dal for 4 whistles or 15 min on medium flame.
  3. Mash your dal well and keep it aside.
  4. heat kadai and add oil.
  5. Add cumins. when they crackle, add garlic,ginger and green chilies.
  6. Saute them until golden brown.
  7. Now, add onions and saute well on high flame.(until golden brown)
  8. Add tomatoes,salt , red chili powder, turmeric powder and mix them well.
  9. cook tomatoes until mushy.
  10. Now, add boiled dal and cook the mixture for 5 to 8 mins on medium flame.
  11. Now, heat tadka pan.
  12. heat ghee or butter in tadka pan and add cumins.
  13. When they crackle,pour this tadka on dal.
  14. Garnish with coriander.
  15. Serve hot.


  • You can use a combination of ½ cup toor dal and ½ cup moong dal in this recipe.
  • Use ghee for enhanced flavor and taste instead of oil.
  • If your toor dal doesn’t cook well,soak it in water for 30 minutes before cooking.
