Sandwich is the most favorite snack loved by every age of group. There are many variations but among all, I personaly love “Mumbai Masala toast ” the most. It has very unique yet very simple flavor of potato masala topped with some cheese. It tastes a bit spicy, a bit sugary and a bit sour. you can say it is “Chatpata” sandwich.

Last few days was bit hectic.Me and mr.husband have decided to finally sit on the table because we wanted to finalize the look of our website. Also i want to keep it simple… I know, You guys are currently facing some problem with site as some of the issues are unsolved and will resolve it very soon 🙂 After trying so many themes and design my mind is set on this look. Coming back to the recipe, I am posting after few days. I wanted to something which is loved by most of the people and sandwich came in mymind.Plus,I am BIG sandwich lover too ;).

Recipe Details for making Bombay masala toast below:

  Recipe bombay style sandwich-how to make mumbai masala sandwich

Prep Time :15 min
Cook Time :15 min
Total Time :30 min
Main Ingredient :Bread ( brown/white)
Serves :4 sandwich
Cuisine : Mumbai


  • Brown / white bread – 4 slices
  • Butter – to roast
  • Cheese – 2-3 cubes or as per your need

Ingredients for potato masala:

  • Potatoes,boiled and mashed – 2-3 medium
  • Salt to tatse
  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Matar/ green peas, boiled – 2 tbsp [optional]
  • Cumin – 1/8 tsp
  • Onion, finely chopped – 1 medium size
  • Turmeric powder – a pinch
  • Garam Masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Sugar – 1/2 tsp
  • Fresh coriander, chopped -1 tsp [optional]

    Method for potato masala: 

    1. Start with boiling potatoes and matar- pressure cook both together for 10 min on medium flame.
    2. Take a bowl an mash potatoes and peas well.
    3. Heat oil in kadai.
    4. Add cumin and onion,ginger garlic paste.Roast them for a while.
    5. Add mashed potatoed,salt,sugar,garam masala and turmeric powder.
    6. Mix them well and turn off the flame.
    7. Add coriander and mixx well.keep it aside.


    1. Now, Take two slices of bread and cut the edges if you don’t like.
    2. Spread some butter on bread and spread masala.
    3. Also spread some grated cheese and cover with bread.
    4. Place this sandwich in preheated toaster and toast it until golden brown.
    5. If you don’t have toaster or griller then-  heat your regular tava on gas stove.
    6. Spread some butter on tava and place your stuffed bread on tava.
    7. Again apply some butter and roast them until golden brown on medium flame.
    8. Turn bread on other side and again apply some butter.
    9. Gently press your bread using spatula.
    10. Once it is cooked from both side then transfer it in plate.
    11. Let it cool down for a minute.
    12. Cut them and serve hot with catchup and chutney
    • you can use white OR brown bread according to your liking. I am using brown bread here.
    • Authentic sandwich have cheese in stuffing but you can avoid.
